چکیده

The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) operates with Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) over the air interface. In the literature, the CDMA uplink, e.g. as implemented by the IS-95 standard, receives most attention due to its limiting influence on the overall network capacity in voice only environments. But with the growing demand of the mobile user for multimedia content, the 3G systems like UMTS provide service classes specifically designed for asymmetric traffic such as video streams. This makes the WCDMA downlink (forward link) the potential bottleneck for the network capacity. Another distinction of WCDMA to IS-95 is the introduction of fast power control mechanisms on the downlink. In this paper, we propose an analytic algorithm to approximate the WCDMA downlink cell capacity in a multi-service environment. It is based on a recursion formula and includes the effects of soft blocking and imperfect power control. Due to its design, the algorithm is time and memory efficient and is well suited for the use in network planning tools for e.g. capacity planning or dimensioning issues.

Planning and dimensioning process of a multi-service network WCDMA should consider the whole parameters characterising the radio cell. Among these, we are interested in the required total BTS power and maximum capacity supported by the cell in the downlink direction. This direction requires more radio resources, thus it is more delicate to optimize. In this context, we express these two paramet...

Thorough Analysis of Downlink Capacity in a WCDMA Cell

In WCDMA networks, the Call Blocking Probability (CBP) assessment is necessary for proper cell capacity determination, in respect of traffic load in erlangs, and network dimensioning. This paper focuses on the downlink capacity estimation, through CBP calculation in a WCDMA cell. To this end, we study an analytical model for the WCDMA cell by taking into consideration the effects of the followi...

Characterizing the Downlink Transmission Power for WCDMA Networks in Multiservice Environments

This paper characterizes the downlink transmission power for WCDMA networks in multiservice environments for both urban and suburban macro cells. To calculate the required transmission power for the user in the cell, various modeling approaches are used to investigate the orthogonality, the path loss, and the inter-cell interference ratio of the user. The variation and scattering pattern of the...

WCDMA downlink capacity of cigar-shaped microcells using soft hand-over with SIR-based power control for over-ground train service

In this paper, the downlink sector capacity of a cigar-shaped microcells using wideband code-division multiple-access (WCDMA) with soft hand-over (SHO) mode is analyzed. The two-slope propagation loss with log-normal shadowing is used in the analysis where a model of eight cigar-shaped microcells is utilized to calculate the downlink sector capacity. The performance of the downlink is studied f...

On Downlink Admission Control with Fixed Multi-Beam Antennas for WCDMA System

Fixed multi-beam base stations can significantly increase the capacity of WCDMA systems. Previous capacity studies have not included important Radio Network Algorithms (RNA) such as Admission Control (AC) which are essential to guarantee an acceptable Quality Of Service (QoS). Some of these RNA may have to be changed to secure the full gains of fixed multi-beam antennas. In this paper two downl...
